Sea Salt Art

Extend your children’s learning by inspiring their interest through creating an art project.

You will need:

  • Paint brushes

  • Liquid watercolors

  • Oil Pastels

  • Salt (Any kind of salt will work)

  • Thick paper

  • Elmer’s glue

  • Pencil

  • Different themed stencils

Steps:

  1. Encourage your children to draw ocean scenes with oil pastels. Have them draw an ocean scene with oil pastel across their art paper.

  2. Ask them to paint over the whole paper with blue watercolor paint to create the water. The wax in the oil pastels resists the water so the picture shows through the paint.

  3. Have them sprinkle some salt over their picture. (Cool designs will appear as their painting dries.)

  4. Set their ocean painted paper aside to dry completely.

  5. Encourage them to draw any sea creatures they would like over the dried ocean painted paper. (They may use stencil)

  6. Have them squeeze glue all over the ocean animals.

  7. Ask them to sprinkle their ocean animals with salt until it is covered. Then, let them shake the excess salt off.

  8. Let them dip their paintbrush into liquid watercolor paint and gently touch the salt covered glue lines. Watch the paints travel and colors mix magically!
