You, Me, and the Sea

Children are fascinated by ocean animals. Exploring the creatures underwater can be fun and exciting for them. Learning about the ocean and the natural world under it helps children develop a sense of care and concern. 


Since the ocean inspires the imagination and brings  joy to the heart, here are some fun activities for your curious and bright children. 


OCEAN WORDS

It is a good opportunity to introduce new words to your children and to expand their vocabulary. 

  • Starfish: anemone, coral, sand dollar 

  • Dolphin

  • Seahorse

  • Starfish

  • Crab

  • Lobster

  • Egret 

  • Buoy

  • Lighthouse

  • Ship

  • Wave 

  • Orca whale

  • Oyster

  • Killer whale

  • Shrimp

  • Pelican

  • Squid

  • Octopus



BOOK SUGGESTIONS:


MUSIC, SONG & MOVEMENT


“Fish Freeze Dance”  Play music while your children swim like fish When the music stops, they must freeze. Start music again!


“Whale song”


“Jellyfish”


" A Sailor Went to Sea, Sea, Sea” 


“Ocean animals”


“Ooh La la, Octapus”


“5 Little Fish (Sing to the tune of  “5 Little Ducks)

Five little fish went swimming one day.

Over the sea and far away.

When the mommy fish called "Come back! Come back!"

Only four little fish came swimming back.


Continue the song until:

No little fish came back


Then sing:

A great big whale came swimming past and five little fish swam back so fast!



GAMES


1- Milk Cap Game

  • Collect milk caps

  • Stick ocean life stickers onto it. 

  • Flip over the milk caps to play a memory game.

2- Spy Bottle Game

  • Fill a plastic bottle with sand. 

  • Add ocean items into it. 

  • Secure the bottle with its cap

  • Let your children turn the bottle around

  • Encourage them to name the items they see.

3- Crab Walk

  • Encourage your children to crawl like a crab from one side of the room to the other. 

  • Let them practice as many times as they like

  • Now, challenge them to carry a bean bag on their stomach while they are crawling like a crab.


SHELL SORTING 

Sorting is fun and important for cognitive development.


You will need: 

   - Seashells

   - Divided platter 

   - Tongs


Steps: 

   1- Gather all the seashells in the middle of the divided platter. 

   2- Encourage your children to use the tongs to pick up and sort the shells. 

   3- As they sort, talk to them about the variety of shells.

   4- Always encourage their efforts!
